Mirik  (Sumedha Lake & Pashupati)

Mirik This recently developed resort is nearly midway between Darjeeling and Siliguri on a different route and is increasingly becoming popular amongst tourists. Mirik is known for the Samendu Lake situated at an altitude of 1750 meters / 5800 feet. The climate of Mirik is pleasant for the most part of the year. It is 50 kilometres from Darjeeling. The main attraction of Mirik is Sumendu Lake with the boating facilities. The Lake is nearly 1.25 kilometres long lake with a depth of nearly eight metres. A 25 meters arch bridge over the lake forms a beautiful sight. Boating and mule rides are good pastimes here. There is a Hindu temple called the Singha Devi Mandir is situated on the western bank of the lake. Rameetya Dara and Desi Dara are two viewpoints near the lake. It gives a nice view of the snow-capped Himalayan range and the valley around the region. Both sunrise and sunset are breathtaking from here. Other attractions of the regions are the beautiful tea gardens, Orange orchard and the Cardamom plantations. Pashupati market (In Nepal) is close to Mirik on the way to Darjeeling. Mirik and Pashupati market excursion is a single day outing from Darjeeling.

The small destination is in the hills of Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal. There are few lovely Tea Resort, Home Stay, Hotels and is an altitude of 1767 metres with its own special charms. It is approximately 30 kilometres from Darjeeling and nearly 56 kilometres from Siliguri Town. Sumedhu / Sumendhu lake is nearly 1.25 kilometres long fed by perennial streams keeps the place cool. A floating fountain in the middle of the lake and the view of mount Kanchenjungha reflected in the lake waters is just amazing. A rich forest with thousands of Cryptomaria-Japanica trees clothes the slopes on the west. One can visit Sumendhu lake by walk takes you along the lake over a sleek footbridge connects the garden on the east with the woods on the west. One can enjoy boat-ride in the lake. Sandakphu trek starts from Mirik or Maneybhanjan and generally ends at Mirik. Bunkulung, Chamong, Sourini Tea, Sukhiapokhori, Ramam, Palmazua, Dhotrey, etc are nearby places which offer home stay or Tea Bungalows. 

For Sandakphu trek one can start from Mirik or Manaybhanjan and similarly one can terminate the trek here at Mirik. One day trek, Angling, birding can be organised at Mirik. Basically Mirik is half a day visit or is included in Darjeeling 03 Nights package. There is no nightlife hence its best to visit the place during the day.

Communication

Airways -  The nearest major airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB). It is nearly 60 kilometres and takes roughly 1 30 minutes to drive through the worlds best Tea Estate. The town of Siliguri, roughly one hour drive from the town and so is Darjeeling town also a scenic route touching Nepal Border at Pashupati. Scheduled flights are available from cities such as New Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. There is an availability of the flights from International destinations such as Paro and Bangkok. Regular flights make this destination as a weekend destinations


Railway -  New Jalpaiguri Railway station (NJP) is the nearest railway station to Mirik which is well connected to the major cities such as Trivandrum, Secunderabad, Guwahati, and Chennai, Cochin, Kolkata,  etc. It is approximately 30 kilometres from Darjeeling and nearly 56 kilometres from Siliguri Town. It is also roughly 30 kilometres from the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station (DHR). Hence one can avail the Joy ride of DHR staying at Mirik 

Roadways - Mirik is nearly 70 Kilometres via Darjeeling to Kurseong and there is a short route of 35 kilometres through Tea Estate route. It is nearly 55 kilometres from Siliguri town. It is approximately 30 kilometres from Darjeeling Town. Mirik is roughly 60 kilometres to Bagdogra Airport (IXB)  / New Jalpaiguri Railway station (NJP). The town is nearly 90 Kilometresms from Kalimpong and approximately 160 Kilometres from Gangtok. There is regular bus service and private vehicles & taxi is available for transfer.
