Nepalgunj – The Western border town of Nepal, Nepalgunj is famous for the exciting treks to the Dopolo plateau and Jumla region. It is the industrial and transport hub of the country, Nepalgunj has various attractions: Gharbaritole, Ganeshpur and Sadar Line to name a few. The border crossing, 6 km south of Nepalganj, is one of a limited number of places where non-Indian foreigners are allowed to cross the border with India. Trek to Mansarovar Lake, Mount Kailash from Nepalgung is beautiful trek with huge mountains and high altitude. People suffering high altitude sickness should avoid this trek as lack of oxygen is felt in between. You can fly from Nepalgunj to 'Simikot', the nearest air-strip. From Simikot start your trek in the morning. In about 8 hours you will be in 'Dhandkermi' You can camp in 'Kermi' for night stay (Kermi is 1 hour walk from 'Dhandkermi'). 'Kermi' is considered a good place for camping. Second day you can continue From Dhandkermi or Kermi to 'Tumkot' in about 6 to 8 hours and have a night stay.Third day from Tumkot one can reach 'Yari' in about 5 hours or to 'Thado dhunga' 1.5 hours from 'Yari'. Guest can stay in hotels in Yari. This area is of high altitude (about 3800 metres) so some sensitive people may feel lack of oxygen. Fourth day start for Nara (2 to 3 hours) It is highest point on this trek so everyone feels lack of oxygen. Better trek here slowest possible. The altitude is about 4550 metres. From here now you will descend to 'Hilsa'. Hilsa is Nepal side town of the Nepal-China border. To proceed to Mansarovar lake in China passport and Visa for China is required.After immigration process taxis in Shera the border town of China and take you to 'Taklakot'. From Taklakot, Mansarovar is about 2.5 to 3 hours away. Guest can go ahead for Mount Kailash. It is about 3 hours drive to 'Darchen' the bottom of Mount Kailash. It takes about 14 hours to take round of Mount Kailash. Remember there is no hotel in this area.
Trek to Shey Phoksumdo Lake and Shey Phoksumdo National Park (Dolpa or Dolpo District). Shey Phoksundo is Nepal's largest national park and covers 3,555 square kilometres. The park includes the Kanjiroba Himal, with many peaks of over 6,000 meters, as well as the famous Shey Monastery, the Phoksundo Lake and the Langu Gorge. Shey-Phoksumdo lake is crystal-clear blue water lake. The flora includes pine, walnut, willow, oak, poplar and cypress in the lower southern parts. In the higher reaches, pine, spruce, juniper and birch pre-dominate. The wildlife include blue sheep and ghoral, musk deer, leopard, wild dog, wolf, marmot, weasel, mouse hare, rhesus and langur monkeys. The higher reaches are home to such rare animals as the great Tibetan sheep, Tibetan wild ass, Tibetan gazelle and antelope, and wild yak. Bird species of the park include the Impeyan and cheer Pheasant, chough, raven, Tibetan snow cock, Tibetan twit, brown dipper, Himalayan griffon and lammergeier. One can fly from Nepalgunj to nearest air-strip 'Jufal' in 'Dolpo' or 'Dolpa' south of the park. From Airport you have to walk 2 to 2.5 hrs to reach Dunai, the District headquarter of Dolpa District. You can take a hotel and rest for air travel tiredness. From Dunai it takes about 2 days trek to reach Shey - Phoksumdo Lake. In one day you can reack 'Chhepka' village. You can camp there if you have with you or take rest in local hotels. Next day you can continue trek and reach to Shey - Phoksumdo Lake. Visitors can also fly to Jumla from where it is a 10 day hike to the Phoksundo and Shey areas. The best time to visit this park is from April to November.

Airways – The nearest International airport from Nepalganj is Kathmandu. Kathmandu is about one hour flight time from Nepalganj. Nearest Airport in India is Lucknow. Lucknow is about 185 kilometres from Nepalganj. New Delhi airport is about 500 kilometres from Nepalganj. From India you can fly to Kathmandu. There are several regular flights from New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and Varanasi in India to Kathmandu from Bhadrapur (Siliguri) is 45 minutes to Kathmandu.
Railways – Nepalgunj is accessible only by road and airways. One can get several trains from Lucknow to Gonda Junction round the clock and from Gonda to Nepalganj there are six trains daily. From Lucknow route is Gonda Junction - Baharaich Junction - Nanpara Junction - Nepalganj Road
Roadways – Lucknow is 185 kilometres, Delhi is 500 kilometres. But it is always easy to fly to Kathmandu and travel to Nepalgunj by flight or by road. Deluxe buses, vehicles, public transport are available daily for tourist movement. Flights are cheaper than road transport for family of two or four.
