It is situated at an elevation of nearly 11800 feet. Yumthang is nearly 160 kilometres from Gangtok is a paradise for nature lovers, with a marvelous blend of flora & fauna, hot springs and breathtaking scenic grandeur. The valley is also the home of Shingbha Rhododendron Sanctuary having 24 species of Rhododendrons. Shiv Mandir and Yume Samdong or popularly called the Zero Point, located close by are equally fascinating spots. Yumthang package tours are organized by the registered travel agents only. This small tourist hot spot is situated nearly 24 kilometres from Lachung in a valley. Rightfully called the Valley of Flowers as in Flowering season i.e. Sring there blossoms vivid colours of variety of Rhododendrons, chimals and blue poppies. Yumthang is located on a flat valley and is near the tree line, the surrounding mountains are snow covered. The journey from Lachung to Yumthang is through picturesque landscape and is lined with Rhododendrons which bloom in different colours. March & April promises colourful flowers, where as November end to March usually sees snows. Its flower bed in spring and snow bed in winter. Yumthang valley is a mesmerizing scene with yaks grazing on flower - carpeted meadows against a backdrop of towering peaks. The breathtaking views can become a part of memory. It is a restricted area and special permits are required to visit the place.
Yumthang is open to foreigners with guide and has also caught the fancy of movie makers. The route to Yumthang from Lachung - adjoining the Singba Forest Reserve is scenic . Close to the valley is the Hot water spring. Another 23 kilometres ahead of Yumthang is Yumeysamndong (Yumesamdong) or Zero Point on the river Sebu-chu at the foot of the mountain on which lies the Donkiala pass that connects the Lachung valley to the Lachen valley Yumesomdung. Yumthang is well known for its hot springs and one has to walk a few hundred yards from the road and across a pedestrian bridge on the River Lachung. For the convenience of bathers a hut with two pools in which the hot spring water collects has been constructed. Hot water is rich with sulphur and has medicinal properties. It emanates from a spring just behind the hut and is diverted to the pools. It is difficult to imagine that water so hot in its natural form could be found in such cold place.
The nearest airport Bagdogra Airport (IXB) and the nearest major railway Station New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) is nearly 285 kilometres from Yumthang. Yumthang can be reached from Lachung after 1 1/2 - 2 hours drive from Lachung. Gangtok nearly 130 kilometres via National Highway 10. Gangtok to Lachung is 5 - 6 hours drive and requires Inner Line Permit (ILP) issued on the same date provided one applies it on the earlier day. From Lachung one can visit Yumthang nearly 25 kilometres. Close to the Valley is also the Hot Water spring and Zero point is two hours drive
